Additional Notes
This week's material covers basic elements of sets, subsets, set
operations, and set notation. Although this material may be covered
in a variety of courses prior to college, both the level of coverage
and the notation used may vary widely. As a result, some students
taking CS 242 may have considerable knowledge of this material, but
others may have limited or no experience. Still others may be
familiar with the ideas, but utilized different notations. With such
variation in backgrounds, the purpose of this week is to bring
everyone together with a common understanding of both the concepts
and the notation.
As you will see, the reading and participation activities cover sets
and related topics in a methodical and detailed manner. However,
with varied backgrounds, the amount of time students will need to
focus on this material may vary widely.

Some students with extensive background may be able to proceed
quickly thought all of this material.

Some students may need to devote considerable time and attention
to some or all of this material, without rushing or being slowed
down by others.
By allowing students to work through this chapter on their own,
students can devote the time they need to achieve the needed
mastery.

Be sure you are comfortable with the notation used throughout
the chapter, as it will be used extensively through the
course.
